SCORPION PEST CONTROL

We have all heard the classic winter ballad that starts with, “Oh, the weather outside is frightening….” Well, because of the unusually mild winter in the Las Vegas area, it is becoming even more frightening. Without a hard freeze to kill them off, the scorpion population is exploding. One family reported killing over 100 scorpions in a 3 month period. There are at least 25 species of scorpions in the Las Vegas area. If you come across just one scorpion, be aware. Andy Kuniyuki, Dean at Nevada State College’s School of Liberal Arts & Sciences and associate professor of biology said, “For every one scorpion that is seen, there are six or seven hiding in the house because they tend to travel packs.”

All scorpions will give a nasty sting. You will feel an intense pain similar to a bee sting. There will be swelling around the bite site and a numbness or tingling. According to the Center for Disease Control, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Slurred speech
  • Convulsions
  • Abdominal pain and cramps
  • Respiratory distress
  • Staggered gait

Those are just some of the symptoms. Most symptoms will disappear within 48 hours, unless it is the bite of the most venomous scorpion in America, the Arizona Bark Scorpion. The bark scorpion has poor eyesight and will be aggressive and attack if it feels they are being threatened. In some cases, these bites can be life threatening.
